The film 'Shrek' allow the audience to enter a fairytale world. How does the director achieve this?

The whole film is a fairytale world. But the director shows that not all fairytales are happily lived. I think that the director is trying to show that. E.G at the start of the movie fairytale creatures are being sold because Lord Farquaad thinks that they are ruining his so called perfect world. The director uses Aerial, Panned, long, medium and close up shots to show how many fairytale creatures are in distress and by the use of close ups and medium shots we can see their character profiles.
